Happy Fall from 3rd Grade!
It is hard to believe that we are already into the month of October! I have thoroughly enjoyed working with each student and getting to know more about them as readers and writers.
As you know, Mrs Franklin and I departmentalize, which means I teach all of the 3rd grade Reading and Language Arts. I would like to take this opportunity to share some important information with you.
HOME READING LOGS: Each week your child is to complete 100 min. of at home reading. This can be broken down by reading 20 min/night for at least 5 nights/week. This will be your child’s main reading homework this year. There may be tasks that your child will complete while doing their at home reading as well. Reading logs have been sent home for the past 4 weeks- I hope your child has shared them with you. Logs are sent home with students on Mondays. Please keep this log in a safe, accessible place during the week/weekend and return filled out completely and signed the following Monday.
PIZZA INCENTIVE PROGRAM: Underwood School is once again teaming up with Picadilly Pizza to promote and encourage reading. At the end of each month, any student with 400 or more min. logged (with all information on the reading log complete) will be given a slip for a free personal size pizza from the Underwood Quik Stop.
BOOKORDERS: Scholastic Bookorders are sent home with students once a month. You may choose to send your order to me at school or you can go online and order that way. If you have never before ordered online you will need a our classroom activation code to get started. That code is GRTLQ. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you are having trouble with the online system. If you would like to order something but it is past the due date, just contact me and we can still take care of your order!!
SPELLING: As many of you may have noticed, Spelling looks very different this year. We are using a new program that emphasizes the learning of important words not just for the Friday test, but for a lifetime of spelling in all of their writing. Your child’s spelling ability will grow through skills instruction, everyday writing, and through study of specific words your child has not yet mastered.
Some types of at home activities that you will see coming home are:
- Take Home Tasks- This is a worksheet for you and your child to complete together and return to school the next day.
- Words for Study/Words to Learn- These are the words they have been tested on in class but have not yet mastered. They are handwritten on a paper that says Words to Learn. Students may not be tested on these words right away but they will come up throughout the remainder of the year. Please keep these words in a place where you and your child can practice them on a regular basis.
- Proofreading Practice Pages- I have not sent any of these home yet, but please be on the lookout for them. These will be pages that you and your child can read through together to look for spelling errors to fix.
